The Liberation Emancipation Warriors Volume 2 Marissa Shrock Books Reviews
The Liberation by Marissa Shrock is book 2 in the Emancipation Warriors series. I read this without having read #1 and wasn’t very confused although the events referenced made me curious about the first book. It did take me a while to sort out the characters, especially when they kept going by aliases, their real names, and then also referring to each other by code-names. Apparently in the first volume, Vivica ran away from home and sought asylum with the Emancipation Warriors in order to save her baby. You see, in this futuristic authoritarian USA-ish land, illegal teenage pregnancies result in mandatory abortions. She’s a master hacker and helps the Warriors out during her pregnancy and ends up finding God through them. At the end, her boyfriend/baby-daddy ends up in prison and Vivica joins the Emancipation Warriors to rescue him and participate in the rebellion. The Liberation begins with Vivica arriving at a secret training compound, determined to become an amazing agent asap. Only things happen and she ends up launched into the world of high-tech espionage almost immediately.
The world in this series is futuristic with chips, retinal scanners, nanobots, facial recognition cameras everywhere and so on. And it’s also one that could be a somewhat realistic dystopian future with a Bible sanitized to be more “inclusive”, Christians oppressed for their beliefs, mandatory abortions for unplanned pregnancies, the world moving toward a one-world-order, etc. The pace was exciting and I was constantly terrified something bad was going to happen – I read it quickly because of this. But the book stretched the bounds of believability for me. Vivica is 17, has almost no training, and yet manages to successfully go undercover in extremely dangerous situations and fools nearly everyone. The timeline was confusing – I could swear the book would say a few weeks went by but then it would say the next day and I never knew how much time had passed. Which meant sometimes I’d be incredulously wondering how they implemented a plan so quickly but maybe it wasn’t as quick as I thought? Even with all that, I’d still be planning to read the 3rd of the trilogy if it weren’t for the following
The writing was too sparse for me. If you dislike details, this is the book series for you. I never knew where anyone was – if they were standing, sitting, hovering over a shoulder, (floating? /s ;) ) or on the other side of the room. Things would happen or be said and I wouldn’t understand what led to it. Or something would get mentioned and dropped and I’d wonder if it was wrapped up or not. And I’m still unclear how old most of the characters are aside from Vivica. There’s an obvious love interest and all I know is “it’s not like he’s 40”. So he could be anywhere from 23-35. But if he’s too young, I wouldn’t believe he could be such a high-ranking rebel agent – so I don’t know how I feel about him liking an almost-18-year-old. Or why he even likes her for that matter – they rarely saw each other and when they did, they just pettily bickered.
All that being said, though, I think this series would be a hit with the targeted age group of teenage readers. It just had elements that didn’t work for me personally.
Right about a year ago, I read Marissa Shrock's debut novel, The First Principle. While this book is targeted for a young adult audience, I felt it held great truths for readers of any age. Marissa just released the sequel, an equally fascinating book called The Liberation.
The sequel picks up where the first book left off, in an undisclosed future year, when the world is not as we know it today. Vivica Wilkins is now seventeen years old, a new Christian, a fugitive from the government, and heavily committed to the work of the Emancipation Warriors, an anti-government group that really is her only hope for staying alive.
Vivica undergoes a radical transformation to alter her identity and keep her safe, and she uses her multi-lingual and computer hacking skills to aid the Warriors, with a personal motivation of finding her imprisoned mother and boyfriend, and doing what she can to spare them from execution. Along the way, she finds herself, her country, and her entire world in much greater danger than she ever anticipated, and her faith challenged beyond anything she ever expected.
I don't normally read in this genre and truthfully, there are things about it that scare me. Though written as fiction, there is much about this that could easily be our reality in the future, or certainly a version of it, anyway. It is convicting to think about the sorts of freedoms we consider rights at this moment that could so very easily become a battle or grounds for imprisonment.
Vivica (or Fredrica, as she became known in her alter identity) showed incredible courage beyond her seventeen years as she fought mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical battles to stay alive and one step ahead of danger. The storyline was suspenseful from beginning to end, and I'm eager to read the next piece of this story, as I do believe there is more to come.
If you have teens in your life who enjoy reading, I recommend this as a solid Christian book that offers every bit of the suspense any secular book in this genre would give, but with the added bonus of sound Christian underlying values. If you enjoy novels in this genre, but aren't accused of being young, don't let that stop you from picking up this book. I don't think you'll be disappointed at all.
I would recommend that you read The First Principle before you read The Liberation so you can have a better understanding of the characters, as they do carry from one book to the next. I think you'll enjoy the second book much more if you've read the first part of the story.
Marissa, congratulations on a well-crafted sequel to your novel. Looking forward to the next installment!
* Marissa provided me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own! *
Even more exciting and action packed than The First Principle, The Liberation is an excellent follow up. Shrock combines intrigue, emotion, twists-and-turns to create a book that will keep the reader wondering what is coming next. Ms. Shrock did a great job on this YA Christian novel.
Should have read the First Principle before this one, but got totally caught up in it quickly. Can't wait for book 3.
Wonderful book! Can't wait for the next one in the series!
Marissa Shrock did it again! The Liberation is a MUST read! There are so many twists and turns your heart will be pounding for sure. You definitely will not want to put it down. I can't wait for the next book to be released!
I was swept into the story from the first page, and was entirely captivated throughout the story. I can hardly wait for the next book!
The sequel to the first book didn't let down. I like how the characters are explored in more depth and where they have been led as their journey is unfolding. Can't wait for book three.
